The barricades finally came down late Wednesday afternoon, as the realigned West Whitaker Street east of College Street reopened to traffic.
The project that started last October had to shut down for the winter months leaving the road barricaded shut.
The approval to open the roadway came following an inspection by the Illinois Department of Transportation on Wednesday after the traffic signs were erected earlier in the day.
The project eliminates the jog on West Whitaker at College Street so it is now a regular four-way intersection.
Guinzey Construction of Ashley is completing the $620,000 project.
