To say it was a good day on the track for Casey Mount Vernon would be an understatement as they competed in the Class L State Track Meet held at Carterville High School. They added to the state title the school won in boys basketball this year by hoisting the big trophy on Saturday.
Malik Grissom nipped Fulton’s Caleb Harrington at the line in the 400m dash to win the title in a time of 52.94 to Harrington’s 52.96. Centralia’s Jaxson Hancock was 8th in 55.67. Malik also won the 800m in 2:11.34 with Hancock 8th in 2:15.45.
Mount Vernon also won the 4×200 meter relay in a time of 1:35.65. That team included Staples, Crowder, Grissom and David Barnes. Centralia was 3rd in 1:39.75 which included Jaxson Hancock, LeKendrick Bratton, Kendyn Ashlock and Jaedyn Smith.
In the boys 7th grade 100m, Logan Thompson of West Jr High ran a time of 11.02. Bratton of Centralia was 3rd in 11.70, Mount Vernon’s Rudolph 4th in 11.71 and Davious Barnes 7th in 11.76. In the 8th grade race, Staples was 6th in 11.43.
The 4×100 team of David Barnes, Josh Crowder, Malik Grissom and JaShawn Staples was 2nd in a time of 46.06. The 4×200 team of Chris Rudolph, Davious Barnes, Wyatt Evans and Terryance Cantley was 3rd in a time of 1:43.61.
In the 200m, David Barnes was 4th in 23.85 and Bratton 6th in 23.96.
In the field events, Staples was 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 45’4”.
