The South Central Cougars hosted Class 2a Father McGivney last night under the lights in a rematch of the Class 1a state title game from 2 years ago. The Griffins entered at 29-0 on the season, and left 29-1 when the Cougars knocked them off 4-2.
The Cougars got out in front early with a pair of runs in the opening inning after McGivney plated one to open the game. SC made it 4-1 after 3 innings and after that it was Aidan Dodson’s show. The senior scattered 6 hits on the day and struck out 14 and didn’t walk anyone.
The Griffins threatened in the 7th. Dodson had just 4 pitches left before the pitch count, but he made them count. The leadoff hitter singled on the 2nd pitch, with the 3rd pitch turning into a line drive double play. Dodson had the hitter down 1-2 but the ball got away and hit him setting up the tying run at the plate with the Cougars going to their bullpen.
Senior Ethan Watwood was up to the task as he induced the 15th strikeout of the day to nail down the save. Zane Montes drove in a pair of runs, Dodson had a hit and run along with Buonaura. Andrew Magnus also singled with Calaway Smith.
The Cougars are 19-6 as they host Neoga on Monday.
