The Salem City Council agreed Monday night to sign the Illinois Municipal League’s new Pledge of Civility.

Mayor Nic Farley says the goal is to calm down the rhetoric being seen in some governments.

“The lack of civility in government across the state, they are trying a big push to bring the temperature down on some of these political fights that don’t have to be so heated.”

Farley says Salem is fortunate not to have the problem.

City officials will be asked to read and then sign the Pledge at its next meeting.

The Illinois Municipal League is made up of city and village governments from throughout the state.
