A paraprofessional at Hawthorn Grade School in Salem is being honored for stopping a first grade student from choking during lunch in March.

Hawthorn Principal Marty Adams relayed the story of the quick action of paraprofessional Angie Finley to the Salem Grade School Board Thursday night.

“Without hesitation, Mrs. Findley jumps up, goes to the student and able to give them the Heimlich maneuver and stop the student from choking almost immediately.  The amazing part is the without hesitation.  She didn’t have to think about it, or worries about who is watching her or anything else, she quickly jumped to it.”

Adams says Finley was successful in dislodging the food and preventing any injury to the child.

Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe and the school board presented a Plaque of Appreciation to Finley for her actions.
