NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Louis University graduate student Chloe Wendling is the Atlantic 10 Conference softball Pitcher of the Week for April 17-23, the league office announced Monday. It is the second Pitcher of the Week honor of Wendling’s career. Wendling was the winning pitcher in four of SLU’s five victories last week, posting a 0.93 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP and a .175 opponents’ batting average. She allowed only two extra-base hits in 22 2/3 innings and turned in a 2.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (just 1.9 walks/7 innings). Wendling began the week by firing a complete-game five-hitter to beat Loyola Chicago 5-2. She went the distance again in a 6-2 victory in the opener at Saint Joseph’s, striking out seven and allowing no earned runs and four hits. The right-hander earned a win in relief in a 7-6 game-two win over Saint Joseph’s, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. Wendling completed the week by tossing a three-hitter and surrendering no earned runs and just one walk in the finale vs. the Hawks, a 2-1 Billiken victory. Wendling leads the A-10 in wins (career-high 18), complete games (20) and innings (188), and she ranks fourth in strikeouts (career-high 138). In NCAA Division I, she ranks second in innings, 12th in wins and 49th in strikeouts. Wendling’s performance last week lowered her ERA to 2.83. Wendling’s 18 victories are tied for second most on SLU’s all-time single-season list. With two 3-game conference series remaining – April 29-30 vs. George Mason at home, May 6-7 at Rhode Island – Saint Louis (23-22, 15-4 A-10) is in second place in the A-10 standings. The Billikens are riding an eight-game winning streak, one shy of the school record. SLU plays its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday, April 26, at home vs. Lindenwood. Game time is 5 p.m.
