The Centralia American Legion is seeking help of area businesses and individuals to help pay for the increased costs of this year’s fireworks display.
Finance Chair Wayne Sensel says COVID-19 resulted in a number of the fireworks companies going out of business.
“Supply and demand and its a big demand. Prices have gone up. What we used to get for $10,000 they don’t even want to talk to you right now. Because they know they can go elsewhere and get anywhere up to $40,000. That is a lot for fireworks, but we figured we could make it $20,000 anyway.”
Sensel says the 4th of July fireworks in Centralia is a long time tradition.
“We started in 1937 to welcome the veterans back from WWI and WWII, and have been ever since. We are still welcoming Veterans back from war today. That is what it is all about. And give the community some fun times, food and help celebrate the 4th of July.”
Sensel says they would appreciate donations of any size. They can be mailed to the American Legion Post 446, 117 South Poplar, Centralia, IL 62801, attention fireworks, or stop by the Post. You may also call the post at 618-532-5910.
The Legion’s traditional 4th of July celebration will be held on July 1st through the 4th, with the fireworks display concluding the event.
