Yesterday in 1a, after hitting 256 three pointers at over 37% clip this season, Tuscola’s shooting turned cold in the state semifinals hitting just 3 of 23 in their 40-27 loss to Scales Mound. Scales advances to play Waterloo Gibault in Saturday’s 11am final trying to be the smallest school every to win a state basketball title as Scales Mound has a population of under 400 and the school has 71 kids. The smallest state champion is Hebron, which had 98 students in 1952.
Gibault made the title game by starting fast and never looking back bating Cornerstone Christian 70-46 to improve to 31-7 on the season. All State 2nd team selection Kaden Augustine led Gibault with 20 points.
Teutopolis dropped their opener yesterday to DePaul College Prep 45-17. James Niebrugge led the Shoes with 8 points as they shot just 25 percent from the field missing all 9 3’s they attempted. The Shoes came back in the 3rd place game to beat Rockridge 52-43. Bloomington Central Catholic and DePaul play in Saturday’s finale.
