The Salem Community High School Board was told at Monday night’s meeting that plans for the renovation of the cafeteria is nearing completion.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering estimates the cost of the project at around $ 2 million.
“We are taking a look at full replacement in the kitchen as well as asbestos removal. Replacing the walk-in freezer as well as doubling its size. And looking at and upgrading both serving lines.”
Detering anticipates plans will be finalized by the March meeting when amendments will be made to the performance contracting agreement with Ameresco will be amended to include the project. The work would take place over the summer break and hopefully be ready for the start of the next school year. Detering reports the district will be able to pay for the renovation upfront with money saved earlier and yearly amounts set aside for building improvements in the regular budget.
The board set high school graduation for Sunday, May 21st, at two pm. The last day of school for seniors who don’t have to take exams will be May 15th. The last day of school for other students will be set at the March meeting.
The school board congratulated the Salem boys bowling team that took first in state. Coach Steve Ludwig thanked the school board for allowing the bowling program to begin about 20 years ago and for their assistance over the years.
The board hired Savannah Taylor as the new agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor for the next school year. She has five years of teaching experience and will be moving from Higginsville, Missouri.
The contract for Superintendent Detering was extended five years from July 1st, 2023 through June 30th, 2028.
