Every family in the South Central School District will be getting a free ham for Easter.

The project is being undertaken by Kinmundy Masonic Lodge #398 in partnership with the Grand Lodge of Illinois, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.   It is the result of a proposal from the South Central District Homeless Liaisons Angie Hiestand and LouAnn Donoho to help families still stressed by the COVID-19 pandemic and bring both relief and hope by sharing in the joys of a family dinner during Easter Vacation.

Superintendent Kerry Herdes says the Mason’s accepted the original request for grade school parents and expanded it to all 345 families in all district buildings.

“They wanted every family in the district to get a ham to help meet the needs of the families during Easter time.  And so that grant allotment is $5000 to meet the need of that so we are working with Rose General Stores in Kinmundy to help meet the need in getting those hams and working with families and us to get that job done.”

Herdes notes this isn’t the first time the Kinmundy Masons and the Grand Lodge have come to the assistance of the district.   They have purchased welding equipment to help start the welding class and have also provided $4,000 in vocational and educational scholarships to South Central High School students.

A check presentation was made at Wednesday night’s school board meeting.
