Kindergartners in the Salem Grade School District are having physical education for the first time. Hawthorne Grade School Principal Marty Adams says now that the multi-purpose building in front of Hawthorn is complete and being used for physical education for the first through third grades, the kindergartners are using the old gym upon arrival to school to expend some of their energy before going to class. He says the program is working well.
Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe announced she is seeking a nearly $50,000 State Board of Education grant to replace kitchen equipment at Hawthorn.
“We have some equipment in there that we have had for 42 years since the building has been up. So it’s getting past time on some of those items. It’s getting now where we are having to get them fixed or bring a repair person in, or parts are obsolete so there is no use in putting money in them right now.”
Athletic Director Susie Worman announced the boys basketball team pink out game on December 14th raised $540 that will be given to a local person fighting cancer. She hopes the game can be held yearly, alternating between the boys and girls basketball team. Worman would like to see the proceeds always go to a local cancer victim.
The board hired Lynsey Ellis as a full-time cook and Sally McGreer as a full-time paraprofessional.
At the start of the meeting, six sixth graders were honored for earning an 850 or above on the Illinois Science Assessment taken while they were fifth graders. Liam Shober had a perfect score. Others recognized were Zane Applegate, Peyton Fuller, Rebekah Howe, Teagan Lobek, and Colton Smith.
