The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reports a coating of freezing precipitation late Monday afternoon resulted in a number of single vehicle crashes, including at least two with injuries.
A vehicle driven by 60-year-old Jack Moore, Jr. of Lois Lane in rural Kell ran off the south side of the Route 161 Extension west of Wallis Road around nine Monday night. His vehicle overturned on its top and he was trapped inside. Kell Firemen say they had to remove the driver’s door and a small section of roof to free Moore so he could be taken to a United Medical Response ambulance for transport to Salem Township Hospital for treatment. The extrication was complete at 9:20 pm.
A 44-year-old rural Salem woman was going to seek hospital treatment on her own after her car slid off the intersection of County Farm and England Road at 6:51 Tuesday morning. Reports are not yet available from the sheriff’s department.
The 6900 block of State Route 161 in rural Iuka was shut down late Monday afternoon after a car driven by a 17-year-old Cisne juvenile ran off the road and hit a power pole. The crash caused the power lines to fall across the road. Kell Firemen were called to the scene to assist, but the driver and a 16-year-old male passenger from Cisne both were outside the car walking around and were not injured. Tri-County Electric crews were called to replace the pole and power lines. The driver was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions. The crash occurred at 4:12 Monday afternoon.
The sheriff’s department also handled crashes Monday morning in the 700 block of Oak Street in Patoka and at Green Street and Lakeshore. Other non-injury crashes late Monday afternoon and evening were on the Iuka Road, Red Stripe Road in rural Odin and the Kinoka Road in rural Alma. The sheriff’s department Tuesday morning handled a crash at Cross Road and Robin where a vehicle slid through the intersection and struck another vehicle.
