Governor JB Pritzker is celebrating passage of the Illinois Workers’ Rights Amendment.
The new amendment to the State Constitution passed with 58% of the vote, solidifying the right for people to collectively bargain or join a union in Illinois. Pritzker praised the success of the campaign at a luncheon with union leaders in Chicago.
“Illinois laborers have been at the forefront of fighting for fair wages and fair work day so it’s only fitting that it is Illinois that is the first state in the nation to enshrine in it’s state constitution the right to organize and unionize.”
Opponents of the amendment argue it will drive up taxes and lead to businesses leaving the state.
