Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Williamson County in deep Southern Illinois.
Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 7 was requested by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident that occurred on Wednesday.
State Police say preliminary information indicates the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service on Devil’s Fork Road, near Carbondale. Upon arrival, the sheriff’s deputy encountered 47-year-old Jeremy Fowler of Carbondale, IL. As the deputy exited his patrol vehicle, Fowler began approaching the deputy with a weapon. The deputy ordered Fowler to drop the weapon. Fowler continued to advance toward the deputy and the deputy discharged his weapon striking Fowler, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deputy was not injured in this incident.
State Police say this is an active investigation and no additional information is available at this time.
