Hazel (Dare) Knox, 101, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:25 am December 1, 2023, at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor.
She was born November 5, 1922, in Wayne County, Illinois to the late Oliver and Mary (Turner) Bailey. Hazel first married Alva Dare. She later married Louis Knox. They both preceded her in death.
Hazel is survived by her son, Alva Duane Dare and wife, Juanita of Mount Vernon; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Hazel was preceded in death by her sons, Marvin Dare, John Dare, and Roy Dare.
Alongside her husband, Hazel was the owner and operator of Dare Grocery for many years. She was a special lady and a generous person. Hazel loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew and adored her.
A Visitation will be held Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am with Adam Dare officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Hazel’s honor to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
