Bond has been set at $250,000 for a 60-year-old Salem man formally charged in Marion County Court with home invasion and aggravated criminal sexual assault in connection with a Sunday evening altercation at a Salem home.
Salem Police say Jeffrey Tate entered a home on West Warmoth Street through a window where the victim of an earlier domestic battery resided. As part of the sentence handed down on November 17th, Tate was placed on one-year probation and ordered to have no contact with the victim.
Salem Police say they received an open line 911 call at 7:55 Sunday evening where arguing could be heard in the background. When police arrived they heard a female screaming for help. After finding all doors locked, officers forced entry and found the female on the main floor. Police say Tate was found upstairs and was taken into custody without incident.
Police arrested Tate for aggravated criminal sexual assault because he allegedly groped her in the altercation allegedly taking place when police arrived. The alleged victim received minor injuries but refused hospital treatment when checked by EMS personnel.
Tate also has another domestic battery charge pending against him where the same woman is the alleged victim.
A public defender was appointed to represent him. A preliminary hearing is set for December 20th.
