The Salem City Council Monday night received an update on public works projects.
Public Works Director Annette Solo says the West Whitaker Street project is moving along quickly.
“They need about 15 more good days of weather to get that job done. They started bringing in rock and everything today (Monday). We are at the mercy of mother nature right now. The intention is to pour the section right up against College Street first so if the weather does turn we can get the barricades off of South College Street and make it more passable.”
Solo says the Illinois EPA has performed an inspection of the landfill and has found some issues.
“We got some areas that definitely need to be addressed and it is going to require bringing in some heavy pieces of equipment so there is going to be some cost involved. But it is sorta out of our hands because we are going to have to do it.”
Solo wants to give the city council a tour of the shuttered landfill so they understand what they will be spending money to fix. She’ll know more once she gets a formal report on needed improvements from the EPA.
The council approved moving forward on two public works projects. Vandevanter Engineering has been awarded a $10,165 contract for repairs to one of the mixer tank pumps for the Waste Water Treatment Plant. An $11,597 bid was awarded to Foremost Industrial Technologies to replace four variable flow pumps at the wastewater treatment plant.
