The Sandoval Village Board has authorized the hiring of three full-time police officers that will get the village close to having 24-hour-a-day coverage.

Police Chief Joe Lyons updated the board on progress at Tuesday night’s meeting.   He reports Zach Cartright is scheduled to graduate from the full-time police academy on December 9th.   Cartright will then work with other officers until the first of the year when he will begin working on his own.  A second hire, Luke Crawford, is scheduled to take the power test next week as a first step to enter into the full-time police officer academy.   Lyons says they had a third new officer, but he has now declined that position.   The chief is now advertising to try and find a candidate for the other full-time opening.

The board adopted its annual tax levy.  It is 4.99 percent higher than last year’s property tax collections avoiding a truth in taxation hearing.

The new Sandoval water tower is now in operation.   Public Works Director Phil Milano says there are still a few minor issues to be resolved before the project is complete.

The board approved the purchase of an $11,495 golf car from Battery Specialists and Golf Carts of Mt. Vernon.   The golf cart will replace one used in the Public Works Department that has fallen into poor condition.

Village Administrator LeAnn Speiser told the board she has received positive comments and considers the Homecoming Festival which is tied to the high school’s homecoming a success.   She would like to see it continued next year.

The board agreed to a $150 Christmas bonus for full-time employees and $75 for part-time workers.
