Heavy ‘surprise’ snow hits part of South Central Illinois

The early Saturday morning made beautiful winter scenery. This picture of the south end of Raccoon Lake in Centralia is by Kenya Loyd.

Snowfall measurements up to eight inches are being reported from the early morning snow in South Central Illinois with official readings at the Salem Water Plant of 3 inches and 2.6 inches at the Centralia Water Plant.

The heaviest band of snow appears to have moved through the Beckemeyer, Carlyle, and Bartelso area where six to eight inches of snow were reported in several locations.    However, by the time you reached Mt. Vernon, there was only the dusting of snow that had been forecast for the entire region.

Other readings taken by WJBD Facebook fans included five and a half inches at Venedy and northeast of Shobonier and four inches in areas around Boulder, Odin, and Alma.

While the snow was nice to look at, it caused some slick road conditions and several accidents before most of it melted before noon.

First snow of the year brings excitement from kids throughout the area. This photo was taken by Hannah Hocking of Salem.
