Salem Community Thanksgiving Dinner set for November 12th

By WJBD Staff Nov 3, 2022 | 11:50 AM

The Salem Community Thanksgiving Dinner has been set for Saturday, November 12th.

The annual event sponsored by the YMCA and Saved with Amazing Grace will once again be held at the Apostolic Church at 1600 Mills Cart Road in Salem from 10 am to 3 pm.

Chris Watkins with Saved with Amazing Grade says dinners are free for everyone and take-outs are available for those who cannot attend.  Drive thru and inside seating will be available.

Watkins says they are shooting to provide more meals than last year.

“Last year we hit the 1300 mark at the Apostolic Church.  That was pretty awesome.  The last 2 years we have had the food pantry at the Church of Christ and given out 8000 bags there.  The five years we’ve had our dinner’s about 6000 meals so we had a total between 14,000 meals between the pantry and the Thanksgiving dinner.  The Lord has truly blessed us.  We couldn’t do it without the community first with their generous donations of money and food like turkey’s as well.”

Watkins says they are still in need of donations.

“This year we are going to have to smoke about 200 turkeys so if anyone wants to donate turkey’s also that would be great.  The YMCA pays for all the turkeys and all the other sides as well.  We couldn’t do it without them number one.  They are a big sponsor.  Our police station here also has been very good in donating money and time to help as well.”

Those who want to make a donation for the dinner can drop them off at Country Creek Treasures in the 100 block of East Main Street.

Donations are being accepted for the Covered with Care Blanket Drive by the YMCA as well.   New packaged blankets can be dropped off through November 11th at the Salem Apostolic Church, Country Creek Treasures, Salem Dollar General, Salem Township Hospital, Rural King, People’s State Bank, Iuka State Bank and Salem City Hall.

Blankets will be available to those in need during the Community Thanksgiving dinner.
