Robert “Bob” J. Atchison, age 84, passed away peacefully on Oct. 23, 2023, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Bob was born on Sept. 16, 1939, in Centralia, IL, the son of Darrell Eugene and Maxine Julia (Goodwin) Atchison. On Jan. 14, 1968, he and Marcia Owens were married at the First Baptist Church in Centralia by Rev. Louis Bean and she survives him.
In addition to his wife Marcia of 55 years, he is survived by one son: Eric Atchison of Henderson, NV; two daughters: Jennifer Francois and fiancé Kelly Wyman of Centralia and Jessica Duzan of Mattoon, IL; one grandson: Jacob Robert Duzan and five granddaughters: Kayli VanHoutin, Morgan VanHoutin, Alyssa Hast, Abigail Duzan, and Alexus Hast; one great-granddaughter: Gracelynn Genevieve and one great-grandson: Carter Wyatt on the way; four brother-in-laws: Ron Owens and wife Nancy, Doug Owens and wife Karen, David Owens and wife Stacy, and John Owens and wife Radica; along with many cousins, nephews, nieces, and special neighbors: the Mahle’s.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Maxine Atchison, father and mother-in-law: George and Genny Owens, sister: Cheryl Cromeans, and brother-in-law: Larry Cromeans.
Bob served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. After returning home, he enrolled at SIU-Carbondale to complete his Bachelor’s Degree and began his 55-year career in accounting, retiring at the age of 80.
Bob was extremely proud of his family and loved spending his free time with them.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia. Visitation will be held Sunday from 12:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and will be accepted by the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street Centralia, Illinois 62801, (618)532-3523, who is honored to be of service to Bob’s Family.
