2023 10/07 – Leroy Piercy

Leroy Piercy, 93, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, died at Mount Vernon Health Care Center on October 4, 2023.

He was born June 12, 1930, in Boyd, Illinois, to the late Walter E. and Ora (Elliston) Piercy. On November 11, 1949, Leroy married Doris Hawkins who preceded him in death on July 27, 2021.

Mr. Piercy is survived by his daughters, Victoria Hurst and husband, Paul of Henderson, Kentucky, Judy Cralley and husband, Wayne of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Marcie Jones and husband, Joe of Carbondale, Illinois; sons, Stephen Piercy and wife, Candace of Iuka, Illinois, and David Piercy of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Joshua Fields and wife, Taryn of Orlando, Florida, Aaron Piercy of Palm Springs, California, Gabriel Cralley of Chicago, Illinois, Michael Piercy and wife, Jonna of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Kevin Cox and wife, Jennifer of Goreville, Illinois, David Piercy and wife, Rachel of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Emily Piercy of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Lyle Hertenstein of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Westerly Loyd and husband, Quentin of Murphysboro, Illinois, Carlie Jones of Carbondale, Illinois, and Amelia Jones of Carbondale, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Jackson Fields, Hannah Piercy and husband, Liam Gascoin, Ross Piercy, Drew Piercy, Molly Piercy, Taylor Summers, Mesa Cox, Rosalind Piercy, David Reid Piercy, Thomas Piercy, George Piercy, Jay Hertenstein, and to complete the “baker’s dozen,” Lena Loyd, scheduled to arrive this month; sisters-in-law, Doris Jean Piercy of Tuscola and Priscilla Piercy of Houston, Texas; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Hertenstein; granddaughter, Ashlee Bailey; daughter-in-law, Kathy Piercy; all of his siblings, Louise Bruce, Vernor Piercy, Clarence Piercy, Katherine Toney, Elsie Parker, Bob Piercy, and Bill Piercy; sisters-in-law, Mary Piercy, Marilyn Piercy, and Dorothy Piercy; and brothers-in-law, Everett Bruce, Gilbert Hoeinghaus, and Bob Parker.

Mr. Piercy was an entrepreneur. He and his wife started, owned, and operated several businesses over his lifetime, including Burger Barn and LeDor Motors. He also owned and operated a shrimp house on the Gulf Coast in Texas. Additionally, he worked as a car salesman and helped construct a Nuclear Power Plant from 1976-1978. In his retirement years, Leroy enjoyed working with his hands to design, build, and display miniature barns, churches, and creches, many of them reclaimed wood from family barns and other structures.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, officiated by his son, Reverend Steve Piercy. Interment will follow at Boyd Cemetery in Jefferson County. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 6, 2023, at the funeral home.
