John R. Cummins, 80, of Carlyle passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023. He was born on December 23, 1942, in Sandoval, the son of John W. and Theda (Powless) Cummins. He married Violet Orrell on July 13, 1963, at Wamac Baptist Church and she survives him in Carlyle.

Survivors include his son, Charles Wesley Cummins and wife Vicki; daughters, Debra Thorson, and Bobbie Sue Beck and husband Daron; 8 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers, Mickey Cummins and wife Patty of Odin, and Richard Cummins and wife Christy of Sandoval; sisters, Darlene Goodin of Centralia, and Tonya Davis and husband Terry of Quad Cities; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Theda Cummins; his sisters, Jolene Flanagan, Shirley Miller, and Virginia Norris; and his brother, Wesley Leon Cummins.

John was definitely a hard worker, completing any task that was asked of him while working as a union laborer, earning his gold card for 60 years of service. He valued his time spent outdoors, mushroom hunting in the spring, and anxiously waiting for August 1st to go squirrel hunting. He was an animal lover and extremely skillful at training dogs. John loved a good trade and was quite the negotiator. He grew vegetable gardens and enjoyed the fresh taste of the produce he grew. John liked to live a simple life surrounded by family and friends, helping others in their time of need, and living each day to the fullest.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Clark Cemetery in Boulder. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in John’s honor to Clark Cemetery and will be accepted for the family at the Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval.
