The Salem Community High School Board has passed a $13.7-million budget for the current school year.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says while the budget is now in the red, he’s optimistic they will be able to finish the year June 30th in the black.
“The FY23 budget does show negative balances in the 3 operating funds. About $84,000 in the Ed Fund, $48,000 in the Building Fund, and just over $11,000 in the Transportation Fund. When you offset that with working cash the operating deficit is between $10-11,000.”
Detering says revenues were forecast low which will hopefully cover the small deficit.
Principal John Boles reported that 731 students are currently enrolled.
Assistant Principal Clint Wolfe noted there have already been seven out of school suspensions for six students along with a number of lesser infractions. The school district currently has eight students in the Alternative Learning Academy including two who moved into the district already with a learning plan utilizing the ALA.
The board approved an overnight trip for the theater department to attend a theater workshop.
In other action, the Board accepted notices of intent to retire after the 2025-26 school year from Jody Childress and Amy Telford. The board accepted the resignation of Angie Brubaker as paraprofessional effective September 2nd. The board hired Ashley Bachman as dance team coach. Rob Ring was hired as a volunteer wrestling coach pending certification.
