Two students on a Rome Grade School Bus headed home Wednesday afternoon were checked for injuries after a minor accident involving the bus and a truck with an oversized load.
The incident occurred on the Dix-Irvington Road near the Krupp Road intersection southeast of Centralia.
Rome Grade School Superintendent Stuart Parks said the two received minor injuries when their faces hit the seat in front of them after the bus driver hit the brakes after the mirror was bent and the glass broke during impact.
Parks says there were a total of 38 kids, plus a driver, and other school personnel on the bus. When it was not immediately known about the extent of the injuries, the Centralia Fire Protection District, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and Litton’s Ambulance were all called to the scene.
After the two students with minor injuries were checked by Litton’s Ambulance personnel, they signed a refusal for hospital treatment.
The Robinson Transportation Bus was then escorted back to the Rome Grade School where parents picked up students or were taken home by another Robinson Transportation bus.
Parks said he notified parents with students on the bus of the situation along with parents at nearby Grand Prairie School who use the same bus transportation service. Later, Parks sent out a message to all Rome Grade School parents.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Blaine Uhls says reports on the crash are not yet complete and no determination of fault has been made. Uhls said the driver of the truck hauling a pool did not immediately realize the mirror of the bus had hit his oversized load.
