While the November general election is still more than two months off, preparations are already underway for the April municipal elections.

The City Clerks in Salem and Centralia say nomination petitions will be available at their offices beginning Tuesday, August 30th.

In Salem, Mayor Nic Farley and City Council members Craig Morton and Amy Troutt are up for election.   All are four-year terms.  Farley was elected in 2021 to complete the two years remaining in previous Mayor Rex Barbee after he was named city manager.  Troutt was appointed to complete the council position previously held by Mayor Farley.

In Centralia, Mayor Bryan Kuder and council members Robert ‘Spanky’ Smith and Blake Griffin are all up for four-year terms.

Signed nominating petitions must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office during the statutory filing period of Monday, November 21st until Monday, November 28th.

If five or more candidates file for the Mayor’s seat or nine or more candidates file for the two four-year council seats there will be a primary election on Tuesday, February 28th.  The General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 4th.

The 2023 Candidate’s Guide is expected to be available soon at the State Board of Elections website elections.il.gov regarding their qualifications for office and how to correctly circulate, complete, and file their petitions.
