Fire engulfs a carport and then spread to the Jeff Stevens mobile home at 1302 Trenary in Salem Saturday afternoon.

A fire destroyed a carport and adjoining mobile home in Salem Saturday afternoon.

The fire was at the Jeff Stevens home at 1302 North Trenary.  Stevens was alerted to the fire and was out safely before firemen arrived.

Salem Fire Protection District Fire Marshall Bill Fulton says flames were showing from both the mobile home and carport upon their arrival.

“It appears the fire started from the ambers from a burn pile up against a wood fence that was near the carport area.  There was a south-southeast wind that brought the fire up to the east side of the building and moved up into the rafters.”

Fulton says some items could be saved.

“There were some salvageable things on the east end of the mobile home.  The guys made a good stop from the entrance door to the east but everything on the west end of the trailer is probably a total loss.”

Odin Firemen responded on automatic mutual aid.

The fire call came in at 3:30 pm.

Salem Firemen had two other calls later in the afternoon.

Firemen were called to the 400 block of East Church where a tree being cut down brought down an electric service line to a house and was sparking on the ground.   The line was no longer sparking when firemen arrived, but they stood by until an Ameren crew arrived to take care of the problem.

Firemen later responded to a cooking and oven fire at the Sheryl Holzmann home at 401 North Ohio.   The fire was confined to the oven and was out upon the fire department’s arrival.

Salem Firemen hit hot spots on the mobile home after the fire is put out.
