SGT Howard “Gordon” Malcolm, POW, and MIA United States Army, made the ultimate sacrifice on August 31, 1951, as a result of the Battle through “The Gauntlet. His remains were recovered at Camp-5 Pyontyang, North Korea. Malcolm was 23 years of age, and a resident of Mt. Vernon, IL prior to enlistment according to his Military Registration form. Following his death and the recovery effort, he was respectfully entered at the Honolulu Memorial Cemetery, Honolulu Hawaii. SGT Malcolm remained there pending DNA and Odontology identification prior to his survivors being notified as part of the military operation, “No One Left Behind.”Born July 11, 1928, in Belle Rive, Illinois he was the son of Robert Clayton and Anna Loreetta Ramsey Malcolm.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Robert “Bobby” Malcolm, Melvin Malcolm, and Jeannine Malcolm Robertson.Immediate survivors include his niece Theresa Slater and husband Loyd of Salem, nephew Rick Malcolm and wife Michelle of Odin, IL, and sister-in-law Martha Malcolm of Salem, IL. along with several great nieces and nephews.Following being received with Full Honors at St. Louis International Airport, Sgt. Malcolm’s procession will return to Salem, Illinois. The family invites you to gather with them Tuesday, July 11, 2023, from 9:00 am – 10: 30 am in the chapel of the Sutherland – Rankin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 97, 310 N. Broadway, Salem, IL 62881 (618) 548-1234, entrusted with the family’s care. The procession will then proceed to Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon for graveside services at 11:00 am with full military Honors, officiated by the military chaplain and detail accorded.Memorials may be made to the Donor’s choice and will be received by the Sutherland – Rankin Funeral Home, P.O.
