A fire damaged two apartments and resulted in smoke damage to the other six inside an apartment building at 2020 Broadway in Mt. Vernon early Friday morning.
Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sergeant says all the occupants were evacuated safely by fire, police and ambulance personnel without injury. All remain out of their apartments pending cleanup.
Sergeant says all the units were occupied except the one where the fire began on the rear upper story. Firemen encountered heavy smoke and could see fire in the apartment upon arrival. Sergeant says it was later determined the fire had spread into the attic and the apartment below. They were able to stop the fire before it spread any further.
The Mt. Vernon Fire Department is being joined by the State Fire Marshal’s office in determining the cause of the fire.
The Red Cross assisted the occupants of three of the apartments. Sergeant is hoping the residents of all but the two fire damaged apartments may be able to return home later today following smoke cleanup.
Jefferson Fire Protection District, Kell, Woodlawn and Bluford Firemen provided mutual aid assistance.
The fire call came in at 2:44 Friday morning.
