The Centralia Fire Department evacuated the residents of all eight rooms at the Midtown Motel at 402 North Elm early Thursday morning after ceilings began falling in due to water damage.

Fire officials say the problem was the result of inadequate weather protection by a company replacing the roof on the building.

Centralia Police and Fire were called to assist residents who all got out of the rooms without injury. In all, the ceilings collapsed in four of the rooms. The evacuation of the remaining rooms was necessary due to the power being turned off to avoid any further issues with the water damage.

The Centralia Code Enforcement Office will review the building situation and make decisions on when the rooms can be unoccupied.

Fire officials say the Red Cross was not able to help because the displacement was caused by a maintenance issue and not a fire or severe weather.

The report of the damage was first received just after two Thursday morning. The fire department remained on the scene for about an hour and half to assist with the situation.
