Carlyle residents approved a half-cent sales tax to pay for a new pool complex, 428 to 122. The new pool will cost $4.3-million and will replace the current complex built in 1955 that has numerous problems.
There was only one contested race in Clinton County, with an incumbent going down in defeat in county board district one. Larry Johnson finished fourth among the Republican candidates for the three open seats. Incumbent Ken Knolhoff was top vote getter with 505 votes, Joe Jansen was second with 486 votes, and incumbent Nelson Heinzmann was third with 389 votes. Johnson finished with 325 votes.
In Jefferson County, voters rejected doing away with the elected city clerk and treasurer in the city of Mt. Vernon in favor of having an appointed clerk and doing away with the treasurers position. The city clerk change failed 696 to 645 and the treasurer question was defeated 759 to 569.
There were five contested county board races in Jefferson County. In District two, challenger John Howard was victorious with 378 votes followed by Dave Figgins with 70 votes and incumbent James Wilemon with 40. In District 3, incumbent Joey McDermott was victorious with 265 votes with challenger Joe Eckelbery garnered 198 votes. In District 4, incumbent Timothy Marlow had 316 votes and challenger Kenny Hayes 158 votes. In District 4, Cory Capps was victorious with 192 votes.
Johnie Smith II finished with 185 votes. In District 9, incumbent Adam Ortgiesen was victorious with 114 votes. Challenger Lyle Hicks finished with 87 votes.
In Fayette County, appointed sheriff David Russell was defeated in the Republican primary by Ronnie Stevens 2,084 votes to 1,616 votes. In the Republican primary for Fayette County Resident Circuit Court Judge, current State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison beat Troy Payne 1,947 votes to 1,593.
