2023 06/28 – James William ‘Bill’ Bates

James William “Bill” Bates, 92, of Patoka, passed away, surrounded by the love of his family, Sunday, June 25, 2023, at his home in Patoka. He was born on June 15, 1931, the son of Lewis Joseph and Ada Caroline (Arnold) Bates in Patoka.

Along with his devoted wife of 69 years, Marilyn Bates, survivors that will hold dear memories of Bill include his beloved family, son, Jim Bates and wife Amy of Patoka; daughter, Jeanine Bohan and husband Jim of Jacksonville; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers and sisters.

Bill was a third generation, since the 1890s of the Bates family farm. He had a very hard work ethic which he passed down, along with the farm to his son, Jim. Bill was life long resident of Patoka where he raised his family and tended the land as a farmer on the east side of town. He was a United States Army veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. Bill had a strong faith and was active in the Patoka Christian Church, serving as superintendent and deacon and setting a wonderful example to his church family.

Private services in honor of Bill will be accorded, with his grandson, Ty Bates officiating. He will be laid to rest at Patoka City Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Bill’s honor to the Patoka Christian Church and will be accepted for the family at the Day Macz Funeral Home in Patoka.
