SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital has announced a recent addition of the most advanced minimally invasive robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi surgical system.

The hospital says the system is versatile and flexible, with set-up automation and guidance that promotes operating room efficiency.   It provides multi-quadrant access and is used for a variety of complex procedures.

Good Samaritan President Jeremy Bradford says the expanded robotics program, combined with a highly skilled team of surgeons, highlights SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital’s position as a regional destination for advanced care in southern Illinois and confirms its continued commitment to providing exceptional health care services to the patients and families they serve.

Robotic surgery has many advantages for appropriate patients, including smaller incisions and reduced recovery times. At SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital – Mt. Vernon, the da Vinci ® Xi ™ surgical system gives the surgeon 100 percent control of the robotic-assisted system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. The system’s 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view (up to 10X), virtually extending their eyes and hands.

When recommended by your surgeon, the da Vinci ® Xi ™ surgical system can be used for these procedures: Colorectal (colon resection, colorectal surgery), General Surgery (hernia repair, gallbladder surgery), Gynecology (hysterectomy for endometriosis, cancer, fibroid resection, and ovarian cystectomy), Thoracic (lung resection for cancer), and Urology (kidney surgery/nephrectomy and prostatectomy for cancer).

Those looking for minimally invasive surgery should ask their doctor if robotic surgery is right for them.
