Corn and soybean planting is moving along as we hear in the weekly crop report.

Crop statistician Mark Schleusener says nearly four days were suitable for fieldwork on average, letting farmers continue to make progress.

“Soybean planting moved forward by 13 points and is now 3/4 finished.  That compares to 67% for the 5-year average on this date.  52% of soybean acres have emerged compared to 50 normally.”

Scheusener says 89% of corn has been planted.

“76% of corn acres have emerged compared to 71 normally.  The first corn condition rating for the season shows 3% of corn acres in very poor to poor condition, 23% in fair and 74% of Illinois corn acres are rated good to excellent.”

91% of winter wheat has headed and the first cutting of alfalfa is about a quarter of the way done.  Average statewide topsoil moisture is rated at 4% short, 72% adequate and 24% surplus.
