Jefferson County was the top county in Illinois for number of turkeys harvested this spring.
A total of 13,701 wild turkeys were taken this year, up 388 from last year’s total.
Jefferson County had 422 turkeys taken, down six from last year.
Marion County had the next highest harvest in South Central Illinois. 310 turkeys were taken this year, down 28 from last year. Clinton County had 97 turkeys taken, up 12 from last year. Washington County had 138 harvested, up three. Fayette County had a harvest of 215, a drop of 54 from last year. Clay County had 212 turkeys harvested this year, down three from last year.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reports the number of permits issued for turkey hunting dropped from 83,240 last year to 81,903 this year.
