The Marion County Highway Department and Patoka Road District have closed the bridge over Deer Creek on Deer Creek Road near the Patoka School until further notice.
Marion County Highway Engineer Mike McCormick says the bridge has exposed steel piles that have rusted away at the waterline. The problem was first located in January, but the Illinois Department of Transportation ordered the bridge closed following an inspection on Monday.
McCormick is hopeful IDOT will allow them to make repairs that will allow the bridge to reopen. His goal is to have the work completed before school opens for the fall.
