The US Department of Labor has awarded Spero Family Services of Mt. Vernon an $864,000 grant to continue the Youth Build Program in Jefferson and Marion Counties.
Program Manager Cheryl Young says the grant will allow for 48 participants over the next two years. The program normally takes six months to complete and includes getting a GED, construction credentials, OSHA 10 certification, and a forklift operator’s permit.
In addition to the classroom work, Young says the students are involved in construction projects. A home is currently being renovated in Centralia and smaller projects such as ramps and picnic tables for various organizations.
Jefferson and Marion County residents who are interested in the program can get more information and an application at SperoFamilyServices.org/youthbuild. You can also call Spero Family Services at (618) 242-6723 or Young at (618)-335-8961. The next class will begin in August.
