An investigation is underway into the cause of death of a 46-year-old man originally from the Sparta area who died in the emergency room of HSHS St. Anthony’s Hospital following a minor car crash in Farina.

The victim is identified as Patrick Lawless who had been staying with friends in the area.  After the crash, Lawless reportedly walked a short distance to a friend’s house where he later collapsed.  His friend phoned 911 and Lawless was transported to the hospital where he later was pronounced dead.

The Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes has contacted Lawless’ family and primary physician for medical and background information to help determine the cause of death.  Toxicology samples and ex-rays were taken by the coroner’s office.  Toxicology results should be returned in two to three weeks.

Lawless had no identification on him at the time of his death but was determined following an investigation by Farina Police and the Fayette County Coroner’s office.

The investigation is ongoing by Farina Police and the Fayette and Effingham County Coroner’s offices.
