Farmers make some progress in the fields, but still well behind schedule

By WJBD Staff May 3, 2022 | 8:48 AM

Farmers got a little more time in the fields this past week.

Crop statistician Mark Schleusener says the weekly crop report shows about three days were suitable for fieldwork. He says planting remains well behind schedule.

“Corn planting advanced 5 points and is now 7% complete, that compares to 50% a year ago and 43% for the 5-year average.  Soybean planting reached 5% finished compared to 38% last year and 19% normally.”

12% of winter wheat has headed and 48% of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition.  That’s an improvement over the previous week.

Average statewide topsoil moisture is rated as 2% short, 58% adequate and 40% surplus.
