Both the driver and passenger on a motorcycle were killed when a pickup truck struck the cycle while it was at a stop sign at James and Broadway in Steeleville early Friday afternoon.
State Police identify the victims as the cyclist, 26-year-old Dakota Morrison of Chester, and a passenger, 31-year-old Diane Gilmer of Steeleville. Morrison was pronounced dead on the scene, while Gilmer later died at a hospital.
State Police report the preliminary investigation indicates for an unknown reason a pickup truck driven by 34-year-old Nicholas Cook of DuQuoin crossed from the eastbound to westbound lanes of Broadway and then struck the motorcycle waiting at the stop sign on James Street.
Cook was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred at one Friday afternoon.
