An early Wednesday morning attic fire caused heavy damage to a portion of a Centralia home.
The fire was at the MacKenzie Fontaine-Frost home at 1439 Nelms Street. Everyone got out of the home safely before firemen arrived.
Fire Chief John Lynch says the fire was just minutes away from being much worse.
“They had electrical issues last night at some point. They unplugged the fridge and moved it to the other side of the kitchen because they kicked a breaker. The girl was paranoid about the problem so she stayed in on the couch and luckily she did because there was not enough smoke generated from the attic fire to set off the smoke detectors, everything stayed up in the attic. She smelled smoke and he looked up and the whole attic was full of smoke.”
Lynch says by the time the fire was discovered it had already burned through one of the attic trusses.
Firemen pulled down the ceiling tile above the kitchen where the fire was centered and reported that portion of the attic was gutted.
Only water damage was reported in the living area of the home.
The fire call came in at 5:40 Wednesday morning with firemen on the scene for about an hour and a half. All available firemen were called to the scene.
