UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins has been killed in an accident near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Authorities say the 24-year-old was hit by a dump truck while walking on a highway Saturday.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda confirmed the accident but didn’t say why Haskins was on the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Haskins was a first-round draft choice of Washington in 2019 and started seven games, going 2-5 as a rookie. He was 1-5 in six starts the next season before being released. He joined Pittsburgh as a third-string quarterback in January 2021, and last month signed a one-year deal as a restricted free agent. He was expected to compete for a QB spot with Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky.
