UNDATED (AP) — A poor first inning by Gerrit Cole morphed into a nice season-opening win for the New York Yankees.
The Yanks pulled out a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox on Josh Donaldson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 11th.
Cole trailed 3-0 before recording an out, but the Yankees blasted their way out of the hole on homers by Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu.
Rafael Devers hit a two-run shot off Cole, who settled down to retire 11 of his last 14 batters.
It’s the sixth walk-off win for the Yankees in a season opener, and first since 1957.

— Wander Franco had three hits and Francisco Mejía snapped an eighth-inning tie with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in Tampa Bay’s season-opening win against Baltimore, 2-1. Franco started the winning rally with a single, his first hit since signing a $182 million, 11-year contract in the offseason. Brandon Lowe hit a sac-fly for the Rays’ other run.
— The Blue Jays erased a seven-run deficit and completed the biggest opening day comeback in seven decades to beat the Rangers, 10-8. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Teoscar Hernández hit a tying, three-run home run in the fifth and Danny Jansen gave the Blue Jays some insurance with a solo blast in the eighth.
— Kyle Tucker homered twice and drove in four as the Astros clobbered the Angels, 13-6. Rookie Jeremy Peña had three hits, including his first major-league home run. Jose Altuve, Aledmys Díaz and Alex Bregman also went deep for Houston, which hit six homers in an April game for the first time in franchise history.
— Javier Báez wound up with a winning RBI single in the ninth on a game-ending replay reversal in his Detroit debut, completing a 5-4 win over the White Sox. Andrew Vaughn hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Gregory Soto in the top of the ninth to put Chicago ahead, but Liam Hendriks served up a solo shot by Eric Haase before Baez won it. White Sox starter Lucas Giolito struck out six in four innings of one-hit ball before departing with abdominal tightness on his left side.
— Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray tossed seven impressive innings in his Seattle debut and Mitch Haniger homered in the Mariners’ 2-1 win over the Twins. Ray surrendered just three hits, walked four and struck out five. Haniger connected for a two-run blast in the first inning off rookie Joe Ryan.
— The Braves topped the Reds, 7-6 as Charlie Morton allowed two runs and only two hits over 5 1/3 frames in his return from a broken leg. Travis d’Arnaud furnished two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run single in Atlanta’s five-run third inning. Matt Olson had three hits and Orlando Arcia drove in a pair to help the defending champs bounce back from their season-opening loss.
— Freddie Freeman reached base three times and scored a run in his Dodgers debut, a 5-3 victory at Colorado. Freeman fanned in his first at-bat before he was hit by a pitch, walked and lined a sharp single. Walker Buehler struck out five over five solid innings, allowing two runs and five hits.
— San Diego newcomer Sean Manaea fired seven no-hit innings and Jurickson Profar hit a two-run homer in a 3-0 shutout of the Diamondbacks. Manaea handed his no-hitter off to the Padres bullpen a night after Yu Darvish did the same. The no-hitter ended when Tim Hill gave up a leadoff single to Arizona’s David Peralta in the eighth.
— The Giants pulled out a 6-5 win over the Marlins on Austin Slater’s RBI double in the bottom of the 10th. Jazz Chisholm Jr. put Miami ahead on a two-run homer with one out in the top of the ninth, but Thairo tied it with a solo blast. Brandon Belt and rookie Joey Bart also went deep for San Francisco.
— Max Scherzer allowed three runs and three hits in six innings in his Mets debut as he beat his former team, 7-3 at Washington. The benches and bullpens emptied after Francisco Lindor became the fourth Met to be hit by a pitch in the first two games of the series. Jeff McNeil homering on his 30th birthday Starling Marte had three RBIs and designated hitter Robinson Canó delivered a two-run single.
— Kyle Schwarber belted a solo homer and added an RBI single in his first game with the Phillies, helping them earn a 9-5 win over the Athletics. Rhys Hoskins was 2-for-3 with a two-run single and Bryce Harper had an RBI as part of Philadelphia’s 11-hit attack. Aaron Nola struck out seven while pitching into the seventh, allowing four runs and four hits.
— The Cubs and Brewers were rained out in Chicago. The game will be made up on May 30 as part of a twinbill.
