The Salem Wildcats were one out away from their first conference win and knocking off the defending 2a state champions, but Freeburg capitalized on a Wildcats fielding error scoring 2 runs in their final at-bat sending Salem home with a 4-3 loss.
Gavin Zimmermann was very good on the mound going 6.2 allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs with 5 strikeouts. The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Cats scored 3 times. Freeburg answered with 2 in the bottom of the inning to set the table for the walk-off in the seventh.
Salem’s Aden Susmena and Carter Rose drove in runs. Eli Rose had a hit along with Blane Phillips and Charlie Hunter went 2-3 with a run scored.
Salem is 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the Cahokia as they are scheduled to play at Belleville East today.
In other prep action, the SC Cougars are on the road this afternoon against St Anthony.
