Seven Salem Community High School graduates will be inducted into the SCHS Academic Hall of Fame during a Saturday morning program at SCHS.
The inductees are Martha McMackin Garland Davis, Ph.D. Class of 1960, Mason Jett, MD Class of 1965, Dr. Martha (Heck) Stiehl Class of 1968, Rita Nanda, MD Class of 1989, CJ Holthaus Class of 1989, Dr. Charles Munter Class of 1993, and Clara Belle “Tommie” Harrington-Adams Class of 1939.

Dr. Martha Davis, Class of 1960
Dr. Martha Davis was a history professor whose research interests focused on the social and intellectual history of modern Britain. She also held a number of administrative positions at Ohio State University including Dean of Undergraduate Education and briefly Vice President for Student Life.

Dr. Mason Jett, class of 1965
Dr. Mason Jett established a private practice in Oklahoma City where he specialized care in burns and non-healing wounds for 35 years after completing his medical training. While still in medical school, he volunteered to sew up lacerations at Salem Township Hospital for some of those injured in the 1971 Tonti Train Crash. He also helped the injured in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City.

Dr. Martha (Heck) Stiehl, class of 1968
Dr. Martha Stiehl earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and studied with world-renowned artists in Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam. She has been a featured soloist as well as a continuous member of orchestras and ensembles throughout the USA and Europe. Dr. Stiehl is also a former faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was the founder and director of the all-women Baroque ensemble, The Bach Babes.

Dr. Rita Nanda, class of 1989
Dr. Rita Nanda is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Breast Oncology at the University of Chicago. Her research interests include identifying novel treatments for the management of breast cancer, particularly triple-negative disease. Dr. Nanda has authored more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters and is recognized as an international expert in breast cancer research and treatment. She was awarded the 2014 NCI Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award.

CJ Holthaus, class of 1989
CJ Holthaus is an engineering executive at Centaur Technology in Austin, Texas. He is the system-on-Chip architect for Centaur’s industry-first integration of an A1 co-processor with an x86 processor. Holthaus is the co-inventor of several microprocessor patents. Using Centaur Technology’s designs, its parent company VIA Technologies has sold over 30 million microprocessors to many PC companies.

Dr. Charles Munter, class of 1993
Dr. Charles Munter has been recognized for his contributions to the field of mathematics education. He started as a high school mathematics teacher before completing a Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University and holding faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Missouri. With his research and published scholarship, he has contributed to the field’s understanding of learning and instructional vision and issues of racial equity in mathematics education.

Clara Belle ‘Tommie’ Harrington-Adams, class of 1939
The late “Tommie” Harrington-Adams enlisted as an Army nurse during World War II where she worked at an Army Field Hospital in Belgium. She later reenlisted and eventually became a medical air evac flight nurse. In 1969 after moving back to Salem, she began a private career in the medical field working at Twin Willows and Doctors Nursing Home before retiring as Director of Nursing on Givens Wing, a cancer care wing, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.
The Hall of Fame Induction will be held in the SCHS cafeteria from 9:30 to 11 on Saturday morning as part of the All Class Reunion weekend. While tickets and advance registration are not required, if you are on Facebook and plan on coming you are asked to leave a note on the All-Class Reunion SCHS Facebook page so the Academic Foundation has some idea of how many will be in attendance.
