Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard confirms the department has found human remains in an area off the intersection of Veterans Memorial Drive and Davidson Avenue west of the I-57-Veterans Memorial Drive interchange just southwest of the Mt. Vernon City Limits.
Bullard says those looking for deer antlers that had been shed found the remains just after five Monday afternoon.
Bullard isn’t saying much about the condition of the remains, except that the person had been dead way before the month of March. He reports Coroner Roger Hayse is currently trying to locate a forensic anthropologist to try and learn more about the death and how long the remains had been at the location they were found.
Bullard says they have reviewed missing person reports, but at this point have not made any final determination on the identity of the remains.
The sheriff is thanking Mt. Vernon Police who initially responded to the 911 call and found the remains as well as the Jefferson Fire Protection District, State Police, and the Coroner’s office for their assistance.
