UNDATED (AP) — Alex Ovechkin continues to take aim at Gordie Howe just three days after passing Jaromir Jagr for third on the NHL all-time goals list.

Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win at Carolina, tying the game with 5:04 left in regulation and scoring on the final shootout attempt. The left wing has 769 goals, 32 behind Howe for second all time.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson also scored in regulation for Washington, which has an eight-game points streak.

Rookie Seth Jarvis tallied twice for the Hurricanes, who lead the Metropolitan Division by five points over the Penguins with a game in hand.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— Valeri Nichushkin scored twice and the Avalanche withstood a late San Jose rally to earn their third straight win, 5-3. Cale Makar added a goal and two assists for the NHL leaders, who have 93 points and are 27-5-3 since Jan. 1.

—The Panthers posted a 3-0 shutout of the Ducks as Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice to pass Olli Jokinen for second place in franchise history. Spencer Knight stopped 17 shots in his first career shutout, but Florida finished the game without Aaron Ekblad due to a lower-body injury in the first period.

— Taylor Hall provided a tiebreaking, a power-play goal with 4:47 left in the Bruins’ 4-2 win at Winnipeg. Brad Marchand and Trent Frederic also scored, Charlie McAvoy added a short-handed empty-netter and Charlie Coyle picked up three assists in Boston’s fourth win in five games.

— Tage Thompson scored the overtime winner and Dustin Tokarski made 24 saves as the Sabres won, 1-0 versus the Flames. It’s a rare lost point on home ice for Calgary, which is 15-1-2 in its last 18 games at the Saddledome.

— Josh Norris broke a tie on a power play midway through the third period of the Senators’ 3-1 verdict over the Flyers. Anton Forsberg made 27 saves to help Ottawa end a three-game skid.
