The Nashville Hornets are headed to the Class 2a state basketball championship after their upset win over DePaul College Prep 31-24 in double overtime. The Hornets didn’t lead the entire game and trailed the defensive battle 10-6 at halftime. The Hornets took their only lead in the double overtime session as Saxton Hoepker led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Hornets will advance to tomorrow’s 12:30 title game against Monticello. Another note to this game, Nashville’s starters Hoepker, Kilten GAjewski, Carter Schoenherr, Nolan Heggemeier and Isaac Turner played every second of the double overtime game without a sub.
Monticello pulled off a 54-38 win over Taylor Ridge Rockridge in the other semifinal behind 17 points from Joey Sprinkle who was 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Ben Cresap and Trevor Fox added 12 each and Dylan Ginalick added 10.
In the 3rd place game in 2a, DePaul College Prep earned a 41-22 victory over Rockridge.
In the 1a semifinals, Yorkville Christian once again dominated a post-season opponent as they routed Steeleville 70-27. They advance to play Liberty after they handed Scales Mound just their 3rd loss of the year in a 75-41 victory. Scales would bounce back in the 3rd place game last night to beat Steeleville 55-34 to finish off a remarkable season for the public school with just 70 students enrolled. Yorkville Christian and Liberty play tomorrow at 11am for the state title.
