The Salem Strength Team wrapped up their first ever team competition Sunday over both days this weekend at the Illinois State Championships in Chicago. The team took 2nd overall and 1 individual state title from Monty Murphy as Masters Division overall champion.
The team also set 5 USAPL Illinois State Records. Bryan Brubaker in the Masters Division Squat of 364 pounds. Murphy brought home 4 Master Division records including squat 446 pounds, bench 358, deadlift 518 and overall meet total of 1322 pounds.
But the biggest performance of the day came from 15-year-old Salem High student Owen Becker. In his first ever competition he finished 11th out of 16 teens with a meet total of 986 pounds as a National Qualifer for the National’s in Chicago next month.
Caden Ice also had a good meet lifting a total of 1048 pounds. Eric Brubaker completed a 601 pound squat.
Salem Strength will now look to prepare Becker for his performance at Nationals and prepare a new roster of their athletes for a meet as early as June.
