A 41-year-old Salem man faces multiple charges after allegedly falsely reporting his car had been stolen following a wreck.
Salem Police arrested Derik Collier of Edgewood Drive in Salem for filing a false police report, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Salem Police say the series of events began when Collier allegedly reported his car stolen at 5:43 Monday morning. At 7:03 am, police received a report of a pickup parked on Woodland Drive being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle. A short time later, police discovered Collier’s car parked on the Salem Community High School baseball field parking lot with major front-end damage.
Police say a review of video in the area showed Collier allegedly around the vehicle. When Collier came to the police station to answer questions about his statement concerning the alleged theft, he was taken into custody and eventually the Marion County Jail.
During his first appearance in court on Tuesday, Collier had the public defender appointed to represent him and was ordered to abstain from alcohol and drugs. He was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bond.
